SPORT

Is sport not supposed to be for fun?

It should be, and it is. But then it depends up to what level you want to reach. When winning becomes more important than sportsmanship, rules are not always respected.

Whiteshadow . . .

Sometimes it seems the only point of playing a sport is to reach a high standard. And if you reach a high standard, you are expected to take it 'seriously' and 'compete'.

There's also a kind of puritanical atmosphere attitude around, so, even if you aren't very good at sport (and even if you don't like it very much) you will be congratulted for taking part if you are using it as a means for 'getting fit'.

I used to live in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The football team and its supporters there have found it difficult to find a manager who lives up to their expectations.

They want entertaining football - just winning isn't enough. Sometimes, it is said, they would rather have an exciting match and see their team lose than to sit through a boring one where it wins. Radio commentators have been seeing this as slightly eccentric.

But it has been making me homesick because I appreciate the Newcastle approach.

Sport only makes sense if it is fun - both for participants and spectators.

I totally agree with your last comment.

Yes it should be. But at my school everone gets reallly competetive, even when it is only a practice game of netball. Then, in the changing rooms everyone accuses everyone else of cheating, enen if they were not playing. Accusations lead to fights. Fights lead to injuries. This doesn't help people who want to be good at sport.

Hi, Susan, I've just read your comment on my blog asking why I deleted my comment on this blog of yours. (Sounds a bit Irish).
I had done some text, and thought I'd put a photo in my comment. Sadly, I couldn't manage the photo - I tried [IMG] etc, and loaded my photobucket information in the line, but all that came out in my comment was the text of that line, which I'll reproduce here so that maybe someone will tell me where I'm going wrong(?)

Anyway, my earlier comment was to say that I agree with you re sport. It should be fun; but sadly our modern approach to having everything allocated a monetary value has ruined so much that was amateur and voluntary.
