TRAINS

Shouldn't there be more tables in train carriages?

Many seats have fold-away tables you pull down from the back of the seat in front you. They're much better than seats arranged around large, fixed tables where you may have to look strangers in the eye or - God forbid - respond to their polite chit-chat and engage in conversation when all you really want to do is bury yourself in your reading or stare out of the window and get lost in your thoughts.

I understand what you mean Anthony. However, as most of the train journeys I make are with my family, I prefer the fixed tables which can be used for picnics, reading magazines, playing games etc. Before the introduction of of baby changing facilities I even changed babies on them. I always try to reserve seats around a table. Unfortunately the online booking site only offers a choice of front or rear facing airline seats.

I would like to see more fixed tables but less passengers per coach would inevitably mean higher fares so I will settle for what there is.

I'm not saying everyone should sit at a table . . . just that I wish there were more.

If it were easier to take children onto trains, they would grow up in the habit of using them.

There's another thing . . . if I am travelling alone, it can be quite cosy, sitting in what Gareth calles 'airline seats'.

However, I sometimes feel safer when I am at a table with a group of people, even if they are strangers.

Sitting between those high backed chairs when one is uncertain of the person sitting in the adjacent seat can, sometimes, be a bit nerve-racking.
