FREEDOM

The state should leave us free to conceal our identities.

You see women in London concealing their identities as they walk in public. They cover their entire bodies in black cloth, leaving just a couple of small slits for their eyes to see through. There would be uproar if all-men-are-rapists presented themselves in public in this way. We saw some of these women a year or two back walking the streets carrying banners inciting people to commit capital offences: "Kill", "Behead", "Slaughter". The state should make this form of identity concealment a criminal offence.

Anthony . . .

The issue you raise here is an important and interesting one.

However, when I wrote this post I had something different in mind.

I was already worried by the idea of ID cards. Now, there is the suggestion that the school records of all children over fourteeen should be kept on a central file . . . for ever!

Maybe I was brought up on too many black-and-white Second World War films where the 'goodies' had to hide their true identities for all sorts of important reasons.

And maybe I don't trust that every government in the future will hold our best interests to heart . . . for always.

And maybe, that while I don't mind admitting to employers that I haven't got a maths O'level . . . maybe I would rather not admit to how many times I failed it!
