If swimmingpools were more elegant - would we swim more?

I think we might. Going for a swim at your local swimming pool should be a pleasurable experience - but in my experience it rarely is. Pools are often cold, grubby and functional. They are seldom places in which you would wish to loiter.

I'm sure I would.

I once went to a very old public swimming pool with brick pillars (inconvenient but attractive) and a lovely greenish light which (I think) was reflected from the tiled floor, made of little mosaic tiles. At least, I think there were tiles like that. It was so lovely my memory may have elaborated! But whatever the precise details . . . I only went once (I was visiting friends who then moved) but if ever I were to re-visit the area, packing my swimming things would be a 'must'!

(Then, I suppose, I'd find it closed and, if there is a replacement, it will be concrete and glass, with impersonal echoes - like our local one - which I haven't been to for about ten years.)
