Sometimes I look at the lights twinkling on a chemical factory, or the steam rising from cooling towers - and think how beautiful they are!
It’s a right nuisance.

Hi,
You left a comment on one of my my blogs to have a look at your blog and tell you what I think... I like the idea of blogging and it is a great way to promote and develop your interests...
I had a look at your blog and maybe others will look to from my blog... I am not sure how relevant most link backs are that I get from other bloggers but I find it hard to find related content sometimes.
Liked your original comment, Susan - too many people think "natural" = "beautiful" and "human-made" = "ugly" or perhaps "useful" = "ugly". Factories and old pithead gear have a beauty that some of us do appreciate. Anthony's comment reminds me of my youthful love of planes and the air force which was rather spoiled when I realized the whole point was to be able to kill lots of people - in self-defence, of course :-{{
It's one of those odd things . . . I live in my little house by the sea and listen to the radio and reckon I know best about more-or-less everything . . . as I keep telling the news-casters, the policiticians and all the experts interviewed there. I shout quite loud - but I'm beginning to suspect they can't hear! Sometimes, I write to my MP . . . but there's always more to say. So, here it is!

And the mushroom cloud of an atomic bomb?
Anthony
It's interesting, that.
Some things look beautiful or interesting, even if I wish they didn't exist.
But the fear I experience when confronted with images of mushroom clouds means I can't step back far enough to 'see' them objectively.
(I suspect though, that, if I could, I'd find them 'interesting' rather than 'beautiful'.)

Chris . . .
There's also a temptation to think beauty and goodness are necessarily connected . . . wishful thinking!
And another temptation . . . to impose 'right or wrong' labels to things which are morally neutral.
